I picked up Cat Power’s latest release, Jukebox, the other day, and I really haven’t stopped listening for much else. Having been a fan of Chan Marshall’s first covers album, 2000’s The Covers Record, I was excited to hear another batch of her interpretations. After hearing the opening track, “Theme from New York, New York,” I realized just how amazingly diverse this album was going to be, and the rest of the record does not fail to impress. While two of the songs aren’t true covers (one of them is a new version of earlier recorded “Metal Heart”), the rest of them are fresh takes on known tunes.
Personal favorites from this indie hottie include The Highwaymen’s “Silver Stallion,” George Jackson’s “Aretha, Sing One For Me,” and Bob Dylan’s “I Believe In You.” For an added bonus, try to get a hold of the 5 bonus tracks that came with the Limited Addition release - particularly “She’s Got You” by Hank Cochran.
