This marks the celebration of CEMusic turning 400 posts old! To commemorate, I crashed my computer. Yes, I had a colossal hard drive failure. Luckily I had (nearly) everything backed up. I lost some documents (we’ll see if I can rescue them) that I’ve created since backing up my entire drive in February, and I lost day one of my weekend visit to Lancaster for my nephew David’s 1st birthday. And one of the annoying things is re-figuring out all my passwords that have been saved on this machine. FTP data, etc. All in all, though, not a bad amount of stuff lost. And now, with my brand new faster, bigger and better hard drive self-installed seamlessly on my MacBook, I feel I have a fresh start. Kind of nice in a way. I feel I’m starting fresh in a few different aspects of life - most notably my acting comeback that’s in the works. I also starting writing a song.
Speaking of songwriters, I just took my first look at Andrew Bird’s words at the New York Times. Interesting ongoing column - check it out.
[mp3] Andrew Bird -
“Fiery Crash” (Armchair Apocrypha)
[mp3] Dave Matthews Band - “Crash” (Listener Supported)
You’re probably already familiar with La Blogotheque and their Take Away Shows, but on the off-chance you’ve missed this one I wanted to write a bit about it.
Vincent Moon and co. are geniuses. Basically what they do is get bands to perform some of their songs in a unique environment - Arcade Fire in a freight elevator, St. Vincent laying in a bed, Cold War Kids in a warehouse, etc. They get some really original and intimate performances that take in the viewer in a way I’ve never experienced before. How I wish I would have thought of this years ago.
Anyway, the most recent addition is that of Bon Iver, everyone’s new favorite stripped down and bare acoustic heartbreak (sorry Damien). They do three of their songs in various locals in Paris, but “Flume” is my favorite of the three. I’m also including a few of my other favs - the aforementioned Arcade Fire video, along with Yeasayer, and Grizzly Bear (plus the original mp3s that go with each song). If you haven’t checked it out before, you’re missing out. Go to Take Away Shows immediately. Well, immediately after viewing these.
[mp3] Bon Iver - “Flume” (For Emma, Forever Ago)
[mp3] Arcade Fire - “Neon Bible” (Neon Bible)
[mp3] Yeasayer - “2080″ (All Hour Cymbols)
[mp3] Grizzly Bear - “Knife” (Yellow House)

I am really, really excited about this week’s playlist. I don’t know why, but while putting this together I felt like there’s some really great new stuff that hadn’t really struck me before, but man, I’m lovin’ it.
Khoiba has been my Czech band of choice for a few years but their new album is killer; Magic Wands blew me away at a concert this week - they should be big; Animal Collective has never been a personal favorite, but their new EP is top quality; Fleet Foxes put out one of the albums of the year; Jamie Lidell’s new record is new to my ears, but I think I dig it; The Ting Tings are fast becoming an obsession; I can’t wait to see We Are Scientists play their new album live; Sigur Rós… do I need to say anything about them?; the new Amos Lee is as good, if not better than Supply and Demand; and The Roots’ “Birthday Girl” has been stuck in my head since I first heard it - even despite the voice of Fall Out Boy.
1. Khoiba - “Taste It” (Mellow Drama)
2. Magic Wands - “Teenage Love” (Black Magic)
3. Animal Collective - “Water Curses” (Water Curses EP)
4. Fleet Foxes - “Quiet Houses” (Fleet Foxes)
5. Jamie Lidell - “Figured Me Out” (Jim)
6. The Ting Tings - “Keep Your Head” (We Started Nothing)
7. We Are Scientists - “Spoken For” (Brain Thrust Mastery)
8. Sigur Rós - “Illgresi” (Me› su› í eyrum vi› spilum end)
9. Amos Lee - “Jail and Bombs” (Last Day at the Lodge)
10. The Roots - “Birthday Girl” (Rising Down)
