The Bamboos - Rawville [2007]

Link 2

Aussie six-piece The Bamboos are one of the tightest, most incendiary live acts on the deep funk circuit. Rawville proves Lance Ferguson’s besulted grovers are more than just one-trick ponies. While the rip-roaring funk betters remain, they’re interspersed with a superb selection of slower-paced soul and hip-hop nuggets. The latter – all with Ubiquity regular Ohmega Watts – are decent enough, but it’s the straight-up soul contributions from Kylie Auldist and Tyra Hammond that impress most. Put together with the Bamboo’s usual gritty production, it all adds up to arguably the best funk album of the modern era.

The Bamboos - Step It Up [2006]

Link 2

Heavyweight funk act The Bamboos hail from Australia and their first 7″ single quickly made waves around the world and earned them a single deal with Kenny Dope and Keb Darge’s Kay Dee label. “Tighten Up” b/w “Voodoo Doll” cemented their reputation amongst the global funk community. UK based Tru Thoughts signed the act for an album and Ubiquity picked-up the record for North America. This will be the 4th record to be released under the Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity arrangement following on from Quantic Soul Orchestra, Nostalgia 77, and Quantic album releases. Despite their raw funk flavor, The Bamboos obviously grew-up on hip hop and are into the heavy dance floor beats, in fact vocalist Alice Russell guests on a cover version of the UK broken beat anthem “Transcend Me” (originally by Bugz in the Attic’s Afronaught).

The Winans - The Very Best Of The Winans [2002]

Link 2

The Winans were the precurser to the contemporary gospel music of today but still highlighted their traditional roots. If you like gospel music or even r&b with a purpose, I don’t see how you could possibly not like this CD.
Songs like “The Question Is”, “Uphold Me”, “Restoration” & “Ain’t No Need to Worry” (w/ Anita Baker) are some of my most favorites. But, honestly, I love all the songs on this CD. So, get your praise on for real and get this CD!

Entire album is great including the celebrity appearances such as Stevie Wonder, Teddy Riley, and Aaron Hall. I like the flavor the cameos add to this album. If you’re into mid-tempo music this is the album.

Jimsaku - 100% (1990)

Former Casiopea drummer Akira Jimbo and bassist Tetsuo Sakurai joined forces to form the drum n’ bass group Jimsaku. Together they released almost a dozen records.

Information on this group is somewhat sparse, but the music fortunately is all HEAT! So if you need some hype music to get you ready for the night on the town, don’t listen to anything that tells you to super soak anyone or grills or going to a club (even if that’s where you’re going). Give these records a try…

AB & The Souljourners - Lyrically Inclined 1.3 The Odyssey [2005]

Link 2

Ab, ne’ Aaron Abernathy, delivers a 1st class soulful cuisine to the masses with his newest release, Lyrically Inclined 1.3: The Odyssey. With pitch-perfect harmonies, thumping drums and earnest songwriting, Ab transports the listener to a soulful place of Elysian proportions. Backed by the premier talents of Russell Carter on drums and Malik Hunter on the bass, a melodic backdrop is laid as Ab adds his voice to the mix. It’s hard to find a standout track among this album because you hear the caliber of musicality in every song. You have the smooth balladry of the “I Just Want to Make It Work” (remix); the haunting vocals of “Unrequited”; the funky, grooving “Afro” and the album just continues to impress throughout.

This is a CD that you can listen to in the car, while you clean the house, while you’re chillin’ w/your favorite person or hanging out w/your folks. You won’t be disappointed…

Bio:

When you grow it in a household where the record needle never collected dust, it’s only right to dedicate your life to the art. Ab made up his mind to walk this musical path in his early years, developing a love for the piano and a nact for playing his favorite radio songs– by ear.

Before you knew it, Ab was participating in the musical ministry at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Cleveland, OH. As the head musical coordinator for the Annual Easter Program, Ab re-energized the program through unique vocal and instrumental arrangements. His dedication to challenge himself and others in music was evident then, and served as the first sign for things to come.

Once Ab landed in Washington, D.C. to pursue a degree in Music, from Howard University, the focus to excel in the art was undeniable. Inspired by Sly and the Family Stone, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Shuggie Otis, L.T.D, The JB’s, and the Ohio Players, Ab began to hone his eclectic sound and performance, which has been experienced by the DC metropolitan area for the past years.
